The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed way back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef describes how the Romans were skilled in the use of many herbs, including some that we all recognise like thyme, rue and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like parsley and basil. These new herbs and spices prompted a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are now in private collections. The arrival of television brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
