The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` far back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these early cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Later, we find a couple of interesting books dating from the 1300s - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the upper classes of those days. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from the holy land, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created a torrent in recipe books, many of which are now in private cookery archives. For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich houses competed with each other to serve up the most exotic banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipes became highly prized. However, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording recipes common in their social group. The arrival of television gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
