The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial instructions for meal preparation.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are some stone tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful.

Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are some recipe books which were published in the 14th Century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are unconnected to the curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the rich people of the period.

Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of Europe competed with each other to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a result cooks and their recipes were much in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

The TV revolution brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site.
