The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of meal recipes far back into the far past, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, these, ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
As we move on, we find some recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books have no connection with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menues of the rich people of that time. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from Arab countries, including coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new tastes created an outbreak in books on cookery, some of which are now in academic collections. The revolution that is television gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
