The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existance of recipes way back into the far past, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, generally, these early records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are some tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have two books from the 14th Century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of meals served to the nobility of that period. Over the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
