The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. However, mostly, these old records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have a couple of cookery books which appeared in the 14th Century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the indian food that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of food enjoyed by the rich people of that time. Over the next few centuries, the rich families of Europe competed to lay on the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe books were highly popular mostly as a result of better eduction, people having more spare time and a general increase in wealth. |
