The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found far back into distant history, at least as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, these, early cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to historians is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius recounts how the chefs of Roman times used many different herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, fennel and parsley. Over the next few hundred years, the powerful and rich competed with each other to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipes were much in demand. However, it was during the 1800s that cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. The arrival of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
