The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existance of recipes far back into the far past, in truth as far into history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, in the main part, these early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we find two interesting recipe books from the fourteenth century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are not about the indian curry that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the wealthy. During the succeeding few hundred years, the families of Europe tried to serve up the best banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookbooks were starting to become popular due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more disposable income. |
