The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes far back into the far past, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, these, old records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are some tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Closer to modern times, we find a couple of interesting recipe books published in the 14th Century - one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are unconnected to the indian food that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared for the rich people of the period. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the holy land, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created an eruption in recipe publications, some of which still exist in academic collections. During the succeeding few hundred years, the families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookbooks were in high demand, as a result of better eduction, more leisure time and having more money. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
