The History of Recipes

We can track the history of `recipes` back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these old cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful and blissful.

Later on, there are a couple of interesting books from the 1300s : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the upper classes of that period.

For the next few years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes of the day.

By the advent of the twentieth century, recipe publications were in great demand, due to better eduction, more free time and having more disposable income.

The introduction of the TV brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this site.
