The History of Recipes

Food historians have proved the existence of recipes way back into antiquity, in truth as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing food.

Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius describes how the ancient Romans used a good variety of herbs, including a few you will know such as thyme, fennel and dill.

In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an increase in publications on food, some of which are now in private cookery archives.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site.
