The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of `recipes` back into the far past, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as bay, rue and dill. For the decades that followed, the rich families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The arrival of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
