The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of written recipes far back into the far past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, these, early recipes were just very simple pictorial recipes for food preparation.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also tells us how the Roman cooks used many different spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as bay, rue and dill. During the following few hundred years, the families of Europe tried to serve the best banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. However, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The arrival of television gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
