The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked way back into the distant past, in fact as far as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, these, old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are a couple of books from the fourteenth century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the menues of the rich and powerful of that period. Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of the West strove to lay on the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, testing, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The TV revolution brought us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
