Directions
Cream together until light and fluffy, then add: 3 lb Confectioner's
sugar Cream and scrape bowl, then add:
12 T Water 6 T Karo
Do not over-mix or icing will contain air. Does not need to be
refrig- erated. (This is very similar to "Basic Buttercream", which
is also a general purpose icing that is good for decorating and for

The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of written recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, these, ancient records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main meal and afters, something we still use today. Additionally, he describes how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like bay, rue and parsley. For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich tried to lay on the best banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of television gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
