The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes far back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early records were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main meal and desserts, something we still use today. This early Roman chef describes how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices, including a few you will know such as basil, rue and asafoetida. Over the next few centuries, the powerful and rich houses tried to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, testing, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
