The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, mostly, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he recounts how the cooks of his times made use of many aromatic flavors, including a few you will know like bay, rue and parsley. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including basil and coriander. The introduction of these new tastes was responsible for an explosion in books on cooking, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
