The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, sadly, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into starters, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he recounts how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including some that we all recognise such as bay, fennel and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices led to an increase in recipe books, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives. When we get to the 20th century, cook books were highly popular due to better eduction, people having more leisure time and being a little richer. |
