The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existence of recipes far back into history, in fact as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, sadly, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius describes how the ancient chefs used many aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like thyme, rue and parsley. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes prompted a surge in manuscripts on cooking, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
