The History of Recipes

Experts have proved the existance of recipes back into ancient history, in truth as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these old cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.

Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated.

As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the 1300s - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are unconnected to the indian food that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich people of the time.

Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing popular recipes of the day.

By the arrival of the 20th century, cookery publications are increasing in popularity mostly due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and disposable income.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now.
