The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into antiquity, certainly as far as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these old cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Moving on, there are a couple of cookery books published in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of food cooked for the upper classes. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new tastes was responsible for a torrent in cookery books, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
