The History of Recipes

We are able to follow the history of meal recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these old records were just basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.

As we move on, we have a couple of recipe books published in the fourteenth century ; one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich people of those days.

Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from Arab cooking, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new spices and herbs prompted a surge in cookery books, many of which are now in private collections.

The arrival of television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site.
