The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existence of recipes way back into distant history, in fact as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these early cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were some books which date from the 14th Century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the rich and powerful of that time. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookery publications were greatly in demand mostly due to increased literacy, people having more free time and a general increase in wealth. |
