The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` way back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these early records were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also tells us how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today for example bay, rue and dill. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices prompted a torrent in manuscripts on food, many of which still exist in private libraries. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery publications are starting to become popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money. |
