The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be traced back into history, in truth as far into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, generally, these old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are two interesting recipe books dating from the 14th Century - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared for the rich people of that period. When we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications are increasing in popularity due to more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and disposable income. |
