The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of recipes far back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these ancient recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `blissful`. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a few documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius recounts how the early Romans made use of a good variety of spices, including a few you will know for example bay, rue and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices led to an explosion in recipe publications, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. When we get to the 20th century, cookery publications were increasing in popularity due to more people being able to read, people having more spare time and having more money to spend. The TV revolution brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
