The History of Recipes
Food historians have found proof that recipes existed back into history, in truth as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, these, old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `wonderful`. Closer to modern times, there are a couple of interesting cookery books dating from the 1300s ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared for the nobility of those days. During the succeeding few hundred years, the wealthy families of the West tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. However, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe publications are increasing in popularity mostly due to better eduction, leisure time and being a little richer. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
