The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of written recipes far back into the far past, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by the Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius informs us how the Romans made use of a wide range of herbs, including some that we all recognise for example thyme, rue and dill. Later, we find some books which appeared in the fourteenth century : one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are unconnected to the indian food that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of meals cooked for the rich people of the period. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the holy land, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes was responsible for a torrent in publications on food, most of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
