The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` back into ancient history, in truth as far into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `wonderful`. As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also describes how the cooks of Roman times made use of many different herbs and spices, including some familiar names like bay, mint and parsley. As we move on, we have two interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are unconnected to the indian curry that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich people of those days. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like parsley and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices prompted a torrent in books on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. The revolution that is television brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Buffalo Chips recipe.
