The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into distant history, in fact as far into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, these, old records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Moving on, we have some interesting books which were published in the 1300s : a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they have no connection with the indian food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of that time. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from the East, including spices such as basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations was responsible for an explosion in recipe manuscripts, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
