The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be observed far back into ancient history, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, these, old cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are a few stone tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were two interesting books from the 14th Century : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the menus of the rich people of the time. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. When we get to the twentieth century, cookery books were in high demand, due to better eduction, people having more free time and disposable income. The TV revolution gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
