The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of recipes far back into the distant past, at least as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, sadly, these early recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some clay tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. Moving on, there were some recipe books dating from the 14th Century : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the time. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations prompted an outbreak in cookery books, many of which are kept safe in private collections. During the following few centuries, the upper classes competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The revolution that is television gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
