The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of recipes far back into antiquity, at least as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were two interesting books from the 1300s : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the menues of the rich and wealthy people of the period. For the next few years, the rich families of Europe competed to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes of the day. By the advent of the twentieth century, cooking publications are in great demand, mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased free time and having more money to spend. The introduction of the TV brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
