The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of meal recipes far back into history, at least as far into history as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of documents detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef tells us how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of many different spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example bay, fennel and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices created an increase in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are now in private libraries. The arrival of television gave us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
