The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked far back into distant history, certainly as far into history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, these, old cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few clay tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, there are two interesting books which date from the 1300s ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of food enjoyed by the upper classes of that time. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as parsley and basil. These new herbs and spices prompted a torrent in cookery books, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. For the next few years, the powerful families of the West competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of the TV brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
