The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into the distant past, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these early recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for food preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to historians is a collection of tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful.

Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents detailing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also describes how the cooks of Roman times made use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including some familiar names such as basil, mint and asafoetida.

During the following few centuries, the upper classes competed to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day.

By the advent of the 1900s, cookbooks were in great demand, as a result of more people being able to read, people having more spare time and having more money.
