The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far back into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, these, old records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius compiled a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius recounts how the ancient Romans made use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like thyme, rue and asafoetida. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Cappuccino Shake recipe.
