The History of Recipes

We are able to trace the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, in fact as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.

As we move on, there are two books which appeared in the 14th Century ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are not about the spicy food that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals served to the rich and wealthy people of the period.

Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and herbs from the holy land, such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new tastes was responsible for an increase in cookery books, some of which are now in academic collections.

The revolution that is television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site.
