The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient recipes were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have a couple of interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food cooked for the rich and powerful. Over the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. When we get to the 20th century, recipe books were in high demand, as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased free time and disposable income. The arrival of TV brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
