The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes back into antiquity, in truth as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also recounts how the Roman chefs used many different herbs, including some familiar names like thyme, fennel and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new spices and herbs from the East, including spices like coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and tastes led to an increase in recipe books, some of which are kept safe in private collections. The arrival of television brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
