The History of Recipes
We can read the history of meal recipes way back into ancient history, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, early cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Later on, we have some interesting books from the fourteenth century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are nothing to do with the curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of those days. For the next few years, the rich families of Europe strove to offer the best banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the twentieth century, cooking publications are greatly in demand due to increased literacy, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. |
