The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as an idea can be observed way back into the distant past, certainly as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, early records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are a couple of recipe books which date from the fourteenth century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals eaten by the rich and wealthy people of that time.

Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to a surge in manuscripts on cookery, most of which still exist in academic collections.

The TV revolution brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this web site.
