The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions far back into ancient history, certainly as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these early recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some stone tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Moving on, there were a couple of cookery books from the 14th Century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menues of the nobility of that period. During the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
