The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of meal recipes way back into distant history, in truth as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. However, these, early cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a few documents which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also informs us how the early Romans used many herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example basil, fennel and asafoetida. Later, there were two books which were published in the 1300s ; one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are nothing to do with the curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the rich and powerful of the time. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from Arab countries, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, most of which still exist in private libraries. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cooking books are in high demand, as a result of more people being able to read, more leisure time and being a little richer. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
