The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be traced far back into history, in truth as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old records were just very basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Much later, in Roman times a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he tells us how the ancient cooks made use of a wide range of herbs, including many that are still in use today like bay, fennel and parsley. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful and rich houses tried to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it was during the 19th century that cookery and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time. The TV revolution gave us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Cheese & Corn Strata recipe.
