The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existence of recipes far back into distant history, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius informs us how the ancient Romans made use of many different aromatic flavors, including some familiar names like basil, fennel and parsley. Over the following few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the arrival of the 20th century, cook books were highly popular mostly as a result of better eduction, people having more free time and having more money to spend. |
