The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be observed back into distant history, certainly as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some clay tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are a couple of interesting recipe books which date from the 14th Century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are not about the indian food that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the upper classes of the time. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to lay on the most exotic meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The TV revolution brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
