The History of Recipes

Recipes as an idea can be traced far back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, early recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated.

During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he recounts how the chefs of Roman times used a wide range of herbs, including a few you will know for example bay, mint and dill.

Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find a couple of books which were published in the fourteenth century : a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are not about the spicy food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich.

Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the East, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, some of which still exist in private cookery archives.

When we get to the 20th century, cook books are starting to become popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased free time and having more disposable income.
