The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into ancient history, in truth as far as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, sadly, these early recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find two interesting cookery books which date from the fourteenth century : one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food cooked for the nobility of the period. When we get to the 20th century, cook books were increasing in popularity mostly due to more people being able to read, people having increased leisure time and having more money. |
