The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes way back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. However, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. As we move on, there were two books from the 1300s : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are not about the spicy food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared for the nobility of those days. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices prompted an increase in cookery books, the majority of which are now in private libraries. During the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West tried to offer the best banquets, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The revolution that is television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
