The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked way back into distant history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, early cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef recounts how the chefs of Roman times made use of many herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, rue and parsley. Over the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of the West strove to serve the best banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes of the day. The TV revolution brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
