The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be tracked far back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, mostly, these old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find two interesting cookery books dating from the 1300s - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are nothing to do with the indian food that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menus of the upper classes of that period. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful and wealthy houses tried to lay on the most exotic banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes of the day. When we get to the twentieth century, cook books are increasing in popularity due to higher levels of literacy, more spare time and a general increase in wealth. The TV revolution gave us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
