The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes back into antiquity, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, sadly, these early records were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, entrees and desserts, something we still use today. Additionally, he tells us how the early Romans made use of many different spices, including some that we all recognise like basil, fennel and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to a surge in books on cookery, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. The arrival of television brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
