The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, sadly, these ancient cook books were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have two interesting cookery books which date from the 14th Century - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are not about the indian curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the upper classes of those days. Over the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe tried to lay on the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the arrival of the 20th century, cooking books are increasing in popularity mostly due to better eduction, more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Cheesy Gravy recipe.
