The History of Recipes

Academics have found proof that recipes existed far back into the far past, certainly as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, these, early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `wonderful`.

As we move into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also describes how the ancient cooks made use of many different aromatic flavours, including some that we all recognise such as thyme, fennel and dill.

During the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to offer the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our site.
