The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be found back into the far past, at least as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents describing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and afters, something we still use today. He also tells us how the chefs of Roman times made use of many aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like bay, rue and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to an increase in cookery books, most of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The TV revolution brings us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Cherry Streusel Coffeecake recipe.
